Care Guide:

Barro Negro is NOT microwave safe

Though visually striking, barro negro has some physical limitations. Because it is fired at relatively low temperatures and lacks a glaze(or has poor fitted glaze), the material remains porous and can be delicate in regards temperature.

Important Considerations for Barro Negro Use and Care:

Porosity and Absorption: Due to its porous nature and unfitted glaze, black clay may absorb liquids or odors over time. This is normal.

Temperature Sensitivity: It should not be placed in a microwave or exposed to abrupt temperature changes (e.g., from a refrigerator directly into hot water), as this may cause cracking.

Cleaning Guidelines:

  1. Always let the piece cool completely before washing to avoid thermal shock.
  2. Wash by hand using water and a gentle, neutral soap.
  3. Avoid abrasive sponges or harsh chemical cleaners.
  4. Allow the piece to air dry thoroughly to prevent moisture buildup.

Removing Odors from Barro Negro:

If a piece begins to retain smells, a few natural methods can help restore it:

  • Coffee: Allow cooled brewed coffee to sit inside the piece multiple times, or place the object in a sealed container with dry coffee grounds (used or fresh) for several hours. Rinse well afterward.
  • Milk: Warm milk can be used to soak the piece for up to 24 hours. Rinse thoroughly and let it dry completely. This method can neutralize persistent odors effectively.
  • Baking Soda: Create a paste using baking soda and water, apply it to the surface with a soft brush, let it sit for at least 30 minutes, and rinse clean.

With proper care and handling, barro negro pieces can serve as beautiful and functional works of art, representing a remarkable tradition of Oaxacan craftsmanship.
